I do live in one of the popular mountain ranges, but in the eastern part of the U.S. The "Almost Heaven" is a motto for the state, popularized by a singer (Country Road).

Much to the error of common belief, West Virginia is a state and not a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. I don't know if you were kidding or not, a lot of people tease WV'ians by saying that, but I also found out that when I was traveling in Europe that many people have heard of Virginia and they thought that West Virginia was a geographical area of that commonwealth (Virginia is not a state). I thought that was pretty interesting. I usually told people that we blew up the bridge into Virginia over 100+ years ago and we are independent.
