Hello, I posted this same question in about 10 forums today and I'm curious if any experts in this forum would be willing to give me some startup pointers on what to do and what not to do in web design.

I'm new as you can tell and a little green. I want the best methods up front so I dont end up using the wrong design habits which I could later regret.

My first sites were all front page sites using Microsoft Front Page but it seems everyone says to use Dreamweaver. Why is Dreamweaver so good?

thank you in advance

As some of you may know I am wanting to redesign the Dev Dreams website. It currently lacks colour and deisgn and could be much, much better.

The task
You must create a single page layout which could possibly be used as the new site design for DevDreams.com

Guidelines
The layout must meet the following specifications:
Overall width: 755px max
It must have 3 columns, one on each side for navigation and content section in the center(like the current design)
Easy to read and navigate
Note: There is no need to add content, just add temporary links and filler text.

So theres the basic guide to follow...the rest is up to you.

Rules
You must create it yourself or by help from others. You must not however simply download a previous template and take credit for it.
Upon submission you give permission for the staff of DevDreams.com to use the template as we wish. You must also agree that we will officially own the template and all files included once submitted.
All entries must be sent in by the 15th September, 2004.
Prize
For every template submitted the applicant will receive 100 forum dollars. You can submit a maximum of 3 templates.
The winner of the competition will receive the following:
2000 forum dollars
0% withdrawal interest on their bank account
A link from the devdreams site on every page for 4 months
A link in the forum footer for 4 months
Entry into an upcoming competition where the prize is a domain of your choice.
A permanent link on the links page
So what are you waiting for? Submit your template by sending a PM to me, Python. Send me a compressed zip or rar file which contains all of the layouts files.

If you have any queries please PM me. Each time a submission is entered I will post a screenshot of it here.

Thanks & Good luck!

3D Text in Adobe PhotoShop 7

Photoshop is the daddy of all pro graphics packages.
Learn how to make awesome 3D text in minute!

Firstly, open Photoshop. This tutorial is based on version 7, but I expect it will be pretty much the same in CS.
Now, just follow the simple steps:

1. Use the text tool to type some text. Make sure its different to the background colour so you can see it.
Like this:

2. Select the layer the text is on, not the text itself. Then go to Layer > Layer Style > Bevel and Emboss...

3. Set the Style as Inner Bevel and the Technique as Smooth.
Try the depth at 150% and the direction is probably best as Up.
Size will be about 2-5 pixels and Soften maybe 3-7
The angle is probably best at about 130º. And the Altitude at say 30.
You may want to select the Contour box on the left under Bevel and Emboss.

And your done.

The depth, direction, size, soften, angel and altitude can all be changed to suit you.

Have fun.

Daz3D released Bryce 6.0 this morning and are offering it for $6 to those that have a Platinum Club account (which I do). I'm also glad I have PC in Daz3D as it's certainly NOT worth the $99 for non-PC accounts.

The preview pane is smaller than the one in 5.5 (They had said in a feature preview 2 months ago that the size of this pane would be increased)

The camera controls, buttons etc are pixellated

Rendering takes just as long as 5.5 if not longer (I'm yet to test on premium anti-aliasing), estimated time to render is tempermental (gives a short time till it gets to 50% then jumps up). For example I opened a 5.5 Bryce file, estimated time said 1hr 37 minutes till it got to 50% done and then changed to 17hrs 18 mins.

Bryce 6.0 in my opinion is not living upto the standard or features that Daz3D had promised it would...

(Syndicated)

A beautiful web to behold!
In the land of Utopia, all websites are pretty to look at, they have pinks and they have purples, the navigation is guided navigation, from general to specific, and the information the user desires is personal, informative, fulfilling and no further than two clicks away. So impressive are the web site designs in Utopia that visitors camp out on web sites for hours, digesting volumes of knowledge that is presented in a pleasant candy coated way, where trust and credibility are established instantly. Thus, site visitors, with wallet in hand, all become buyers and the site owner's relax on the beach with his laptop enjoying the gentle and musical tone of cash registers ringing in sales.

And then we wake up!

The purpose of this thread is to articulate a few fundamental points prior to me posting differences in the types and methods of web design as we look at templates vs. custom. So we explore design in a series of threads eagerly awaiting your ideas, your thoughts and your feedback that we build a foundation, for lack of a better term, designed with forethought and planning to educate you for informed decisions for your own projects.

The Fundamentals!
A wise person once said to me that fundamentals never die. An axe is as good today as it was eons ago at its birth. Still just as functional in concept as the wheel which has remained unchanged for the most part any fundamental to truly wear that label will have stood the test of time.

It should almost be academic that "You never get a second chance to make a first impression" yet we see so many web sites that seem to operate contrary to this fundamental belief. In the designers world "Appearance is golden but and content is King" and is one of the fundamental truths a good designer would be wise to keep in mind. As both content and design should complement one another for one without the other, is an incomplete work, its not a website. Yet this wisdom escapes so many, that we must explore or shall I say expose the fault in ignoring this fundamental. One cant chose Template vs Custom without the slightest clue of such wisdom. And so it begins, fundamentals;

That sure is a pretty advertisement! Isn't it?
Like A beautiful brochure without any text. Or a collection of words with the visual appeal of a dictionary. Design without function and content is essentially ineffective and void of value beyond the trivial. In marketing we see this many times as advertising, void of one element or another, could easily fail to achieve the slightest motivation or call to action that they must certainly have been designed to do. We ask a few questions to get things rolling.

1. Why then do we see this failure to bring things together played out so often in nearly every facet of display or presentation type marketing practices?
2. Why then do people continue to kick aside conventional wisdom and focus on one element above all else?
3. What element is missing for the complete package?

A symphony with one conductor?
No symphony I've ever attended had more than one conductor. Each member of the symphony , proficient with his/her instrument, in concert with one another to bring about a heart moving melody with nearly hypnotic results only because they work together.

In design, many times we often joke that the one thing programmers are missing is a sense of design and visual structure. Programmers often say designers could care less if it works, so long as it looks pretty. And content writers take the middle road, often referring to both designers and coders as being ignorant of literary style and good typography practices. Do we need a referee or a ring master? I believe an intelligent conductor will do just fine.

This all to often, frequently over looked facet of good design practice, is the reason we have so many sites that are either good designs and poor content, great content and down right ugly designs or a combination of both.

In their book (Web Redesign | Workflow that works) Kelly Goto and Emily Cotler outline several impressive examples of managing workflow from fundamental stages of design beginning at the foundation all the way to testing and usability ****ysis. A central theme is true of the book as chapter after chapter emphasize to some degree the need to manage each genera or discipline to work in concert with one another.

Fundamental to good design then is a qualified knowledgeable conductor who does not micro manage, but rather trusts, those who are expert at what they do to achieve the objective laid before them. Favoring not, one facet above all others as we move now to the individuals, the team players, the symphony. But lets close on this at the end.

* Naturally, we will expand on this in greater detail in the FamousAgents video tutorials and design threads.

The Lone Ranger!
Picasso once said, "Good artists copy, great artists steal" and in the world of design the notion of an original though is almost arrogance on behalf of the designer as experience will eventually reveal that each design is an inspiration of a previous work in some way. I've designed sites to look like post it boards and yet others to look like a photo album laid out on a table. Each design is unique in that its not a copy of another, but each is certainly the inspiration based on something else.

What does this have to do with our second question?
Well, its a long way of articulating a rigid mindset that all to often is easily offended yet arrogantly, remains under the belief that "I'm right, and you're not". True of coders, content writers and designers to some degree, leaving a project solely in the hands of either would demonstrate a slant in the final product which can easily have the appearance of a good and complete design because it is almost certainly inspired on something before it. At some point the design looks familiar to you because its inspired by something familiar. The functionality of the site looks familiar because in all honesty it was inspired by something familiar. And the articles make sense because they are inspired, fully unique in ideas, but familiar in structure.

Thus we conclude this thread on the introduction of fundamentals to a beautiful and functional web site. Now we move into finer points and touch on the differences between templates vs custom in design.

More to follow as I finish this thread as a work in progress..., Be sure to check out the tutorials as they become available.

After receiving a pair of questions about the details behind the design of this forum I figured I'd post a little information about it and vBulletin designs in general so you can gain a perspective on how they are done, what makes them work and what steps I took. Bryant and I agreed that maybe we could or should share some details.

vBulletin is essentially a tabled layout application as some may know and the challenge for many is figuring out what goes where in order to change the look of a stock vBulletin template or develop a custom design.

I'm a real fan of tabs and in fact, I have a few proprietary tab features on many of the vBulletin sites I design because tabbed interfaces can be tuff to create using vBulletin so I figure I had a niche. With WebMasterPost.com I decided that I'd take a stock item and remove the tabs for a cleaner and lighter look for the design.

My method is essentially the same in all vBulletin designs. I start with a set of master vBulletin layouts I have in Photoshop and change colors, features and foundational items prior to cutting apart and placing them into a template.

Now some designers follow the same format using photoshop to get the overall look down by taking a snap shot of vBulletin and doing overlays on a layer by layer basis until the design is changed enough to NOT look stock. This is fine as I do the same thing most of the time. Budget dictates procedure sometimes but doesn't have to be harmed by it. So it is still considered a professional option;

Design is usually perceived as different from the foundation or the core layout. Many of my designs are in fact customized to fit a collection of foundation layouts. So where do foundations come from and how are they designed? Well, that depends. I have a collection of maybe 10 or so vBulletin and 50+ standard web site foundations that are truly different and unique from modified stock examples we see around the web. I gain them from many places, many I design from the ground up, some are a per site license type deals I keep in separate folders and a few are open-source variants I always modify, and sometimes I buy full ownership licenses commercially giving me full rights to the design. As designers all know, to have a good collection of examples to work with and to have a lofty inventory is essential to be competitive. I've attached a screen shot of my working directory structure to give you an example of how I organize my collections and design inventory based on license, rights and structure.

The WebMasterPost.com template is partly based on a commercial template I purchased quite a while ago that I had in my archive inventory and never used on a domain before. With that unused resource we took my design, altered it to fit some of the parts of that foundation and design this forum in a method befitting of its target audience.

My original design of WebMasterPost.com was a bit darker and did not have rounded corners above each category. In fact I had planned to use a few CSS tricks to make each category header a bit different so when each category was closed it would create a composite image. I scrapped the idea as time was pressuring me to get something published. If you would like to see a very nice and clean example of the original commercial template I took parts from, you could visit http://www.forumthemes.com Keep in mind this is a commercial product and licenses should be respected as such.

Now a person had asked me if the design for WebMasterPost.com was custom or stock. The answer is that the visual design is fully custom, laid out on a partly commercial stock foundation, which is the rounded category headers and a few other elements that I took out of other stock foundations I had designed last summer which I had in inventory.

I hope that answers some ideas as to how this forum design came about as It appears that it looked familiar to some people and were curious how we could call it a custom design for WebMasterPost.com The design is custom even if it shares elements from commercial stock layouts we purchased.
Below is an example on my system how I structure my design and development.
