How complicated and involved is the work that a managed cloud host does? Managed hosts seem to charge double what the underlying unmanaged cloud host (e.g. Linode and Vultr) does for each plan.

Is this something that an advanced layperson can handle if there's decent enough instructions somewhere on the net, or is it a "if you have to ask then you should get managed hosting" sort of thing?

I run several WordPress sites. Some are more complex than others (1 is moderately intensive).
I'd like to host all my sites on the same platform, rather than have 1 here, 1 there, etc. I can spend up to $40 a month on hosting. So a few questions:
1) Are there any "premium" shared/cloud hosting platforms out there (I know that sounds like an oxymoron, but some shared hosts are better than others).
2) Should I look at Managed WordPress solutions? Any recommendations?
I am looking to upgrade to something more WordPress friendly. (currently paying about $25/month).

I am really trying to avoid going with a major web host that throws money into advertising with false review sites and such. But I literally cannot find any legit site that shows trustworthy reviews. I myself work for one of the major companies and I know the game when it comes to bells and whistles and small print. I keep seeing advertising things like "Unlimited blah blah" and "99.9% uptime, which is never true. Its usually covered in the small print". Right now I have a solid host, but their web hosting isnt very good. They don't have realistic quotas and such.

Here is what I need: I currently host ecommerce web site (Magento), need huge amount of disk space and bandwidth.
I have had issues with bandwidth being exceeded. Any good web host to Transfer all my files? Discounts? Specials?
