Everybody was sad to see that CentOS 8 has reached its EOL and CentOS 7.9 will also be gone in 2025. Its main alternatives are AlmaLinux and RockyLinux. I've just tested RockyLinux fully for production and can say with absolute certainty that it's much better, more amusing, and faster than CentOS. It has its own Web Console as well which is quite next level considering this Distro stream.

Though, most of the applications and services are still limited to CentOS, I would recommend everyone to try Rocky Linux instead of CentOS.

I am not bothered about I/O speeds, since it is a HDD and also a server that is used for remote backups. Connectivity was the main point. I switched the setting to the 1Gbps with 4TB limit instead of the unlimited 100mbps. The above speeds clearly indicate a good network. The uptime of the server (service provisioned since Jan 10) is at 100%.

This is my third server with Servarica. The newer 2TB servers are more responsive than a 1.5TB server I have from 2 years ago. I attribute it to newer hardware. As a backup server, I would recommend them. Do any of you have experience with this provider? Comments welcome

Privacy concerned users are always looking for an alternative to big tech "free" services which scan your data and build profiles on you.

OpenInbox is a U.S. based secure, encrypted, private, email subscription service built on open-source solutions. You can use our webmail portal or your own favorite IMAP/POP3 client.

OpenInbox does not share user data, monetize users, get funding from advertisers, use tracking, send data to analytics, or require a phone number to signup.

OpenInbox has two main focuses.

Privacy. Encryption prevents any man-in-the-middle from snooping on your email. PGP keys are supported making sure only you and the person who wrote the email can read it. OpenInbox has it's own dedicated servers and doesn't use any google or amazon services meaning no one is collecting data or habits from your email usage.

Power Users. OpenInbox has control panels for power users to set mail policies on what is considered spam including exempt/ban list. Stop being a victim to free service's black-box spam filters that leave you guessing why something went to spam or didn't get blocked. You get access to mail logs so you can see what and why something happened.

If you have ever wanted 100% privacy and the control of hosting your own mail server but don't have the resources or time to learn, and want to avoid the headaches involved then OpenInbox is the solution for you.

Everyone is talking about crypto mining, and the requirements for mining coins has gone way beyond something that is profitable. If you have 550GB free space on any server and supports docker, you can try to mine STORJ (https://storj.io). The price of the token is $1.18 USD right now. Fair warning, it takes atleast 6 months to really see tokens flow in, as your node gets slowly filled up and gets a good reputation.

If folks are interested, I will do a write-up on how to set this up.

Getting storage servers on deals, I have about 7.5TB spread across 4 servers (1x1.5TB Servarica, 1x2TB Servarica, 2x2TB Greencloud), I need to make about 20 $STORJ per month to be profitable. Sometimes it is frustrating, I had to reset the 1.5TB Servarica node twice in two years, losing about 10 $STORJ in the process. I have my reservations, but for some reason, I am persisting with this. It appears easier to mine than CHIA or FILECOIN

I recently had a most unpleasant experience with Nearly Free Speech (NFS) support after changing my legal name:
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/

After reading through their incomplete documentation online, I decided to pay for support and open a ticket. I was very forthcoming about what I needed, provided all requested info, and even offered to pay for whatever support was needed. Here is their response:

"There is a simple assistance request for updating your membership when you change your name. Although there's a nominal fee ($1) for that, we typically waive it unless the person blatantly lied to us about their name. Despite the bold print warning telling you not to, you went a different route.

The issue is that your old membership doesn't have a subscription, but your new one does. There would have been a $30 cost to upgrade the old one, for all the reasons described on our site. So, violating our policies saved you $30."

After this snarky response from them, my account was closed without warning and I have been unable to get a response from their team since.

Thankfully I only used NFS as a domain registrar for personal use, so no damage was done to business assets.

DONT EVER GIVE YOUR GOOD MONEY TO BLUEHOST HERES WHY:

Just had the worst experience with BlueHost. Paid for the domain, clicked my email link to verify. Went to create an account, entered a solid password.
This is when the problems started. It didn't let me login, just kept giving me an error that said "account is being created please try password again in a few minutes." I kept trying different passwords and waiting a few minutes, after an hour I contacted support. Ended up talking with 4 different people and none were able to help at all. One just said to try in a different browser, which I had to download just to use their pos site, that didn't work. Another one said it was because my account "wasn't created right" wtf? When I clearly got charged so my card went through and all my information was correct. Anyways I ended up wasting 2.5 hours of my time & my clients money, I asked them to cancel may account and give me a full refund. They said they couldn't because they needed the last 4 digits of my password. B*tch that's why Im here, cuz it didn't let me create a password!

So now I can't work on my clients site for the rest of the day, and have to wait 48 hours for them to cancel my account and release the domain name so I can start all over again, this time on a different hosting site of course. I don't want anyone to ever go through this BS again. They seem to offer okay features which is why I went with them, however their login process is straight trash- apparentlyI am not the only one who's had issues. also their customer service is horrible slow and did not help me at all. I had to practically beg them o cancel my account they kept saying "gIvE mE a CoUplE MinUtEs To ChEcK sOmEtHinG" but never were able to solve it. So yea, take it from me and stay away from BlueHost. Worst customer experience ever, hope they actually give me a refund.

Whats everybodys opinion on 1n1 hosting in here?

just curious...im thinking of buying the either the 9.99 plan or the 4.99 plan

another question:
i think my current host, servage.net, the databases are so freakin slow its slowing down my whole site, which practically runs on a database.

will the performance of my site improve if i switch to 1and1?

anybody know of other hosts that supply databases that actually run real-time?

thanks

Source: http://www.w3reports.com/index.php?itemid=1095

Hostway Corporation, a leading provider of Web hosting and managed services, has been chosen by Netcraft as the most reliable hosting company site for the third month this year. This respected Web hosting industry authority selected http://www.Hostway.com as the most reliable Web site for hosting providers based on the lowest number of failed requests and speed of connection time.

"Our customers' number one priority is having their Web sites up and running. At Hostway, we're no different. Netcraft's acknowledgement of our reliability reiterates our drive to provide our customers 99.99% uptime," said John Lee, vice president of marketing for Hostway.

The award is based on the lowest number of failed requests and speed of connection time. The purpose of using these two measurements is to give the clearest indication of network capacity and congestions, with the least impact from the performance of the companies' own web servers. Netcraft believes customers place more importance on the percentage of failed requests than outages on a hosting companies' site, as this gives an indication to the routing reliability.

Netcraft measures and makes available the response times of fifty leading hosting providers' sites. The performance measurements are made at fifteen-minute intervals from eight separate points around the Internet, and averages are calculated over the immediately preceding 24-hour period.

Hostway has been consistently recognized as a leading Web hosting provider by online hosting resources. TopHosts has ranked Hostway as the number one hosting provider from 2000-2005. Web Host Directory has also rated Hostway the number one ecommerce Hosting Provider for the last three years.
