Ad management firms buy many web sites ahead of cookie changes to Google Search

APRIL 16, by MAX WILLENS

As ad buyers and sellers brace themselves for the coming cookie changes, companies that built businesses out on media’s long tail now find themselves closer to the center of the action.

Over the past year, ad management platforms such as Freestar and Mediavine have been beefing up their outreach efforts to recruit more publishers as well as advertisers, exploring partnerships with large DSPs and other platforms around identifiers, even joining the early trials of the products coming out of Google’s privacy sandbox.

“Three years ago, I don’t think I would have believed you if you’d said The Trade Desk is reaching out to us,” Mediavine CEO Eric Hochberger said. “DSPs that you normally would be pounding on the doors of are now reaching out to us.”

While the monetization platforms face the same challenges that independent publishers do — trying to balance between deterministic and probabilistic data, weighing alternate identifiers against each other, mulling Google’s various Privacy Sandbox initiatives — their scale has made them newly relevant, not just to ad buyers but even some mid-sized and larger publishers who, faced with the grim prospect of another giant overhaul to their business, are letting go of the rope instead, either opting out of advertising altogether or letting someone else do the work for them.

“We generally work with mid-tail publishers,” said Paul Bannister, the chief strategy officer of CafeMedia. “But more and more, we’re seeing bigger and bigger publishers working with us, because it’s so hard.”

Though the specifics of what they offer (and the kinds of sites they serve) differ slightly, in broad strokes, ad management companies all offer the same services to publishers: essentially passive income from advertising, in exchange for control over the ads run on those sites. In most cases, the publishers keep the lion’s share of the advertising revenue.

Dating back to last year, that pitch seems to have been compelling. CafeMedia and Mediavine in particular managed to grow the size of their audiences over the past year. CafeMedia’s sites reached 167 million unique users in February 2021, up 14% year over year. Mediavine’s audience grew about 8% year over year, reaching 121 million unique users, per Comscore. Over that same period, Freestar’s audience was close to flat, drawing 118 million unique users, compared to 122 million unique users the same month last year.

Growth in the number of sites under each platform was much stronger. All three platforms vacuumed up dozens and dozens of new sites in 2020, according to an analysis of Comscore data. Mediavine alone added more than 1,700 site domains to its dictionary definition in Comscore over the course of 2020, a 32% increase year over year.

“We’ve definitely grown our business development team,” Freestar CEO Kurt Donnell said. “We’re out there hitting the pavement a little bit harder. Companies that have never looked at ad management before are taking a fresh look.”

The actual number of sites each platform added may be even bigger; Comscore’s dictionary definitions omit sites that do not meet the measurement firm’s minimum reporting standards.

That scale, already significant enough to place all three companies in the Comscore top 50 list of digital properties, makes them a convenient place to shop, particularly as ad buyers look for more direct relationships to replace the open-market buying they were able to do using third-party cookies.

CafeMedia in particular has been hiring sellers this year, hoping that the removal of third-party cookies will open up an opportunity for Cafe Media to forge more direct deals to brands and agencies.

“Buyers are already strapped for resources,” Bannister said. “They can’t pick up 20 new direct relationships. They’re going to choose bigger partners.”

But the scale these platforms have is only valuable if it’s compliant with the new rules Google is making, so each is busy exploring different solutions, some of which require more direct participation from the sites they represent. For example, last September Mediavine launched grow.me, a single sign-on technology designed to help it gather first- party data across its network of sites.

But unlike a new ad unit, grow.me asks publishers to do something potentially a lot more disruptive to their site experiences, all to combat a problem that hasn’t even started yet and that many of Mediavine’s customers aren’t aware of.

“Most of our publishers are not reading ad-tech trade mags,” Hochberger said. “We’re in more of a position of trying to educate them. We don’t see them having the concern they should.”

There’s also the added issue of how useful first-party data would be for some of the hyper-focused sites ad management platforms often serve. “There’s a lot of publishers that don’t have very unique first party data to attach,” Donnell explained. “What do you learn about a logged-in solitaire user? There’s a decent number of content sites that are utilities in nature, that don’t justify [requiring log-in].”

Consequently, the ad management firms, like most every other publisher, are kicking the tires on lots of different solutions. Cafe Media is representing independent publishers not just in the privacy sandbox but in initiatives overseen by the IAB, W3C and Prebid, which is handling the identifier UID 2.0.

But just like the rest of the industry, none is in a position to be prescriptive about which solutions will win out. “Frankly, we don’t have a solution yet,” said John Shankman, the cofounder of Hashtag Labs, a startup that provides ad ops solutions to publishers. “I don’t think there’s an industry consensus yet.

I have read a lot of talk recently relating how bad the new adsense changes have been.

I have heard webmasters remark on (to name a few) some of the following things...

1- Lower clickthrough rates
2- An increase in public service advertising (for which you do not get paid if clicks are made)
3- Lower overall income
4- Less money on each click that is made

I wonder Google has decided to do this to it's users?

As far as I know, advertisers have not got a reduction on their costs per click rates.

This begs the question, what is happening to all that money?

No prize for guessing who's pocket it goes into!

Why is that the most loved and most used SE in the world, suddenly feels that they need to increase their income?

When Google announces it's IPO in the next few days, we'll really be able to see how well they are doing.

I'm looking forward to it.

I was thinking of ways to advertise my Boston real estate listing site. I came up with an idea that will work if your business is local. Here's what I'm doing:
1) Think of an unusual and bright color for your car and have it painted (Only cost $1000 as I found a paint shop with a winter special, they don't have much business in the winter).
2) Find a good sign shop and have them create magnetic signs that will stick to the sides/back of your car and can come off later. This way, everywhere you drive in your city, your business will be advertised.

I have not had the magnetic signs created yet but I've had the car painted a bright yellow and am shopping around for a magnetic sign shop.

This is how my car looks now (this is an identical looking car, also painted with Darkar Yellow):

I thought this was an interesting article from Turnbulls Blog (link below):

How Not to Advertise

Here is my own little guide on how not to advertise a website.

Spam
Any form of spam will give your site bad credibility. I remember a statistic that only 0.00001% of people actually buys products through those e-mails with subjects like ?Buy Cheap Viagra!!!!? ? so spam doesn?t convert that well. There isn?t just e-mail spam, all forms of spam: blog comment spam, forum spam, digg.com spam and all the other ways to get your site noticed. The only real exception to this is MySpace Spam.

Auto-Surf
What is Auto-Surf? Basically, you leave your web browser running and it visits a bunch of sites and each time you view a site you get ?credit?. You can use this ?credit? to have people view your site in just the same way. The thing is, people are never at the computer whilst doing this, making auto-surfing fairly pointless, unless you want to inflate your stats.

Traffic-Exchanges
Very similar to auto-surfing, except it isn?t automatic. You have to manually click ?Next Site? with each site you view, making this more reliable than auto-surfing, but you could be using this time for something a lot more useful. All in all ? stay away from traffic exchanges and auto-surfing.

Link Farms
Link Farms or FFA Link Pages are simply a page dedicated to try and boost your Google Pagerank, now Google isn?t that stupid. Sites that are noticed using link farms or FFA pages will be penalized or banned from Google. I am not talking about a web directory, they?re fine, I?m talking about just 1 page, where you can add your link, and that?s it?s only purpose.

Paid Traffic
Those deals that say $3.99 for 1000 visitors are worthless ? they are usually either:

Pop Up Traffic
Fake Traffic from the same source
Other unwanted Source
Paid Traffic is 100% useless (no, I don?t mean PPC) ? stay away.

Have any of you tried it? I am about to invest a little into this advertising in an attempt to revive an old music forum I bought, and I'm expecting a good response due to the type of forum I'm running.

I'm going to try some of these suggestions in this article from William Nabaza (His site is at http://www.Nabaza.com:)

Is making money on the web impossible? I think not. Large companies don't have any problems with this one. But the web levels the playing field so that a high school webmaster can design pages that sells more than a site designed by expensive web design companies.

1. Sell Your Content Links.

There is a web site that specializes in selling links from your site. You can either sell your content via password protected sub-directory or via email. The said web site will be the one to charge their credit cards (amex, mc, visa, etc.) and make profit whenever you sell one. There's no monthly or set-up fees, the creation of saleable content rest on you.

2. Look For Companies That Can Sponsor You.

You can write and publish your own newsletter and seek out off-line companies that can sponsor that issue. You can dedicate a single page for them and write their press release on it and distribute over the web for a minimal fee. Study the principle of this one.

3. Sell Text On A Banner Ads.

You can either sell click-thru ads or pay per display banner ad.

4. Sell Directly On Your Website.

You can sell the following: books, music cd's, car, software, gift certificates, etc.

5. Offer Contra Deals.

You can also offer your service in exchange for goods/services rather than for direct payment.

6. Sell Consultancy.

Sell your services as a webmaster to help them set-up an online presence.

7. Sell Links.

Generate a very long list of links to other related or unrelated sites. This is also a good way of generating repeat traffic to your website. If the list became very long, number of expected visits to each participating websites will decrease. Now you can offer same participating site premium links page that they'll be interested to pay for.

8. Charge For Access.

You can password-protect some of the pages in your website and then charge them in exchange of content.

9. Host Other Sites At Your Domain.

Theoretically guarantees a minimum amount of traffic for customers.

10. Surveys or Market Reports.

You can make money two ways on this one. Charge third party companies for including them in surveys, or conduct your own survey and then sell results.

11. Advertorials.

This is similar to an ad feature in a newspaper. Offer website editorial space to your customers, design the page and write the HTML code for them.

12. Sell Souvenirs From Your Website.

This could be your last move if you happen to follow my advice.

Whenever someone talks about creating a business plan and how important it is, I'll be honest, I'm only half listening.

If you don't need funding and you know in your head where you're going with your business, then do you really need one? I'd make the exception if your ready to invest a lof of money into a business, then I can see it.

You people are smart so please bring me back to my senses and tell me why do I need to make one?

I read this article about business plans and decided to post it here for your benefit:

You are starting your internet business ?
You still wonder how you'll avoid the traps, how you won't forget anything, how you'll manage your money?

The business plan will certainly be your best friend to assist you during this period.

What is a business plan ?

As defined on Wikipedia:
"...A business plan is a summary of how a business owner, manager, or entrepreneur intends to organize an entrepreneurial endeavor and implement activities necessary and sufficient for the venture to succeed. It is a written explanation of the company's business model..."

In other words, the business plan is essentially a document designed to clarify the direction and goals of a business.

What makes a successful business plan ?

In order to reach your goal(s), you need to be well prepared.
A business plan doesn't have to be fancy. Often, it is as simple as a Word
document written to prove that your business will generate enough revenue to cover your expenses.
Despite all, it remains the most important tool of your business creation.
So, Take a deep breath, relax and take your time to write it.
Keep in mind these few guidelines and you'll turn your project into a success:

Your business plan must contain a clear and concise writing. Write short sentences with one idea.

Illustrate your ability to make this business a success. It will help you as well to see your key points and weaknesses.

Show profitability. Otherwise, where would be the need to begin with this venture ?

Keep it flexible. The business plan is not really a finished document. Write it in an open manner which leaves room to accommodate new ideas and details as they occur during the course of your business.

As said previously, write your plan with a clear and logical structure. It will help you to keep a good overview on all your

project and find easily key informations when needed.

Below are the 10 key chapters from a typical business plan structure:

Table of contents.

A) Executive summary. This is a detailed summary of the business plan; essentially a condensed version of the business plan.

Introduction. Where a general overview of the business, its activities, services and other details that you see fit to put in it!

C) Outline of business. This is an outline of the businesses legal structure and corporate structure.

D) Outline of services. This is an outline of the products or services that a business offers. This could include pricing and plan details for web hosts.

E) Marketing. Here is an overview of the marketing strategies a business intends to use and would include details of your target market, where you plan to advertise etc.

F) Human resources. This is an outline or detailed information regarding who you are going to employ such as support staff, sys admins etc. This section may also incorporate information on the management.

G) Operational details. This is probably the most important component in a business plan. It outlines how the business intends to operate on a day-to-day basis. It could involve the software and systems used, etc.

H) Financial details. This section could be as complex or simple as possible. A cash flow projection and budget will do.

I) Conclusion - where everything is summarized again, highlighting your businesses vision or goals.

Basically, a business plan is a form of goal setting. Having goals helps you focus and keep on track, and when you look at them it helps you
remember the inspiration that caused you to start your business.
