Career move...

PythonPython Forum LeaderThe Royal RAM
Ive been looking around at various colleges etc for courses which are webdesign related - im leaving school this year and need to think about what im gonna do..

Basically I want to go to college and do some sort of webdesign course but there arent any available which are all about that. All thats available are general computing courses with a single module about webdesign...

So what would be the best route to go down to become an employed designer...prefferably with qualifications(but which ones)?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Id agree with CBG i did an AVCE in ICT then had the qualifications needed to go to uni to do a webdesiign course at uni

however the web design at uni so far i havt done any web design :S
ive made a level for half life and ive also configured a router but thats about it, so just be careful which uni you go, and dont ask the teachers what subjects you will learn because they lied to me, you rpobably best asking students.

Some undergraduate studies concentrates on multimedia studies allowing you to achieve your aim to be a web designer. Then again, it depends where you want to study. UK, I guess?

p, go for a professional course - e.g. medicine, engineering, law, accounting, etc. something that not anyone can do without having gone through university. this way you protect your value in your career. i've been there and done that - take my word for it, life's tough without money.

i know you're interested in webdesign etc and i really respect what you have done for a 15 year old (yes, obenix, half the guys here are many many many years younger than us :)) but you can always continue doing this as a hobby - you don't need proper qualifications to do web design.

a job as an investment banker in london can easily pay 100,000 quid a year. no way you can even think of getting that in this web business (unless you own a company and go big time).

    Personally, I don't agree.

I would get as many excellent looking sites as you can online.

    I mean lots.

    Then apply for a job.
There are loads of firms in the UK, and on NewMediaAge last week there was an article all about how difficult is is to find decent staff.

Show employers that you can do the job by providing them with a list of 5/10 URL that you built and run.

That's the way I'd do it.

College courses are fantastic and I'd probabally go for a new media course of some kind. It'll be pretty broad, but you'll know what to expect and it'll look good on your CV.
    Rave it up.
