Ok i am thinking of developing a new forum. What sorta things would you like to see on a FREE forum.?

On a serious note, what is the theme/topics on the new forum? Are you referring to DevDreams?

I think i have changed my mind there aint no point in building a forum when there is somat like phpbb to compete with. There aint no point. Ahh well back to the drawin board

but think of it this way: there are a lot of people who hate phpbb, even though its free. so if youve got the skills and time go ahead and create a forum system, just make sure you improve on phpbb's down sides

what down sides do you lot not like. The fact you cant have a sig? the way it displays new post. Those sorta things?

I don't use phpBB a lot but those that do, Perhaps you could make a list of all its features and whats good and bad.
Then Martian can keep/improve the good bits but change the bad bits...

hey, i've seen a couple of adsense ad for new forums engines like ovbb - have dropped by to check them out - not bad, actually.

obenix and myself are planning to start a forum - probably stick to phpbb for the moment since it's free..

I use phpbb but i hate how it uses up quite a bit of resources, it should be easier to intergrate with your own website

im sure i could extend the list if i went through it properly but theres a start

Calendar
Ability to Quite, Edit, Reply,
Quick Reply,
Sigs, Avatars
Profile with: emails, IM's, comments, About me etc... join date, location...
Post count, Point system with Store... and Ability to donate points...
Ratings (like 10posts=Noobie, 50posts=Advanced User... etc)
Choice of free graphical or CSS templates.
Has a basic template with simple CSS options so you can make your forum 100% unique by just changing colours...
Search...
New Post Search...
Code to make stuff bold etc
Choice of Smilies sets

Thats about it, I think...

A while ago phpbb relesed a security flaw on there site and many many site that used ohobb were hacked and taken off the net. One of my m8s sites got hacked a deleted. This has been updated so that security flaw has been covered but there are many many problems with the phpbb security

Not many and i will have over taken you . I was thinking what would be better a forum or a portal? What do you guy's think and once again any one want to help let me know, gfx designers, php coders.

I'de quite like to be in on it but I barely know any PHP and I will have very little spare time untill the sumer anyway.

phpbb is one of the preffered forum systems, most forums I use tend to use phpbb. Good thing about it is that it is faster then most other forums, plus they are always making changes, improvements, and security fixes. So as long as you keep your working version up-to-date, security shouldn't be an issue. That and lock-down (secure) your webserver and mysql properly.
