do any of the main search engines still use these? is it actually worth putting them in in pages?

Not really, anyway SE's don't have categories - Directories do...

When you submit to a directory, you choose the category you wan't to appear in.

    Their own scale.

Download the Yahoo! toolbar and you can see it.

Personally I think it's pretty useless though.

the "Title" tag and the image "Alt." tags are still a significant factor in both Yahoo and Google. The most important factor is and will always be relevant inbound links pointing to your site. The more relevant and the higher the PR the better.

Get lots of them from different domains and you'll be on the right track.

    Hugo, well put!!!

Anyway, I still use the meta tags - JUST IN CASE... how much effort does it take to put them in? So why not. Ya got nothing to lose...

And don't forget Keywor density... :D lol
  • dabossdaboss WP V.I.P. ''The Boss'' Administrator
I think it's a balancing act when it comes to keyword density - too many repetitions make the content unfriendly. I do try to repeat keywords but only when its appropriate...
  • CannonBallGuyCannonBallGuy Moderator Shared Hoster
To get the best results on Google, from keyword density... you should aim for 10%. :)
So your probably not doing too bad... ;)
  • dabossdaboss WP V.I.P. ''The Boss'' Administrator
Hmmm.... I think 10% is too high... Can you imagine reading an article in which in every 10 words you got a repeating keyword? I'd go for 2-3 %.

Again, only my 2 cents worth...
  • CannonBallGuyCannonBallGuy Moderator Shared Hoster
    Uhhh... no 10%.
That will get you the best possible results where Google is concerened.
Don't forget, you can have say 20 keywords... so each keyword is only repeated once every 200 words... :D

Put in that way, I'd agree by CBG... anyway, the google update hasn't happened yet? I haven't observed any changes...

I think Yahoo and msn does make use of meta tags if I am not wrong.
  • SEbasicSEbasic Advanced User VPS - Virtual Prince of the Server
Yahoo does as far as I know. They mentioned it a while ago...

Like everyone says - use them anyway.
    Rave it up.

i think yahoo it counts as about 20% towards searches and the same with the tile bar which is quite high
