X-Y Coordinates from an image

Hi there. This is my first post on here :) .

What I want to do is open an image, click a point (or a lot of points) and have a program save the X and Y coordinates of the point to a .txt file. I need to be able to trace around a design (using endpoints for line segments) and save each endpoint's coordinate. I'll then save two distinctive reference points, and then using those I should be able to open the new file as a pattern in this drilling software I have (from New Wave if you know 'em). I know that once the data are in the file my program will open it. I just don't know how to get it to that file. :(

Any ideas you guys have for what program to use, how to do it, or suggestions for writing my own program (although there must be something that can do this) I would really appreciate it.

Thanks.
