Why Doesn't Page Rank Matter Anymore?

So recently I've heard it said that "page rank really doesn't matter anymore." Why is that such a common notion now? It seems to me that Google has not lost any ground, maybe ganined ground, so why should their ranking system suddenly be irrelevant?

I've heard that it doesn't matter as much as it used to, but not that it doesn't matter at all. I think the reasoning behind this is that PR doesn't index your site. You can have a PR6 site out there that shows up on page 10 when searching for the subject of the site, simply because all the site has is backlinks and no indexing. Now, I don't think PR is worthless, they certainly sell PR7,8, and 9 backlinks for a pretty penny, but that still won't get your site indexed by Google.
