Is it possible to disable OE6 from wanting to compact messages on exit? If it isn't, can someone recommend a different e-mail client that uses .eml extension (anything but IncrediMail).

I had the same problem, there is a registry tweak one can do however it is best to let it compact, and the next time it asks will be approximately in a 6 month interval.

I've got into the habit of moving mail out of OE into sub-folders on external drive because the last time I clicked OK to compact I lost lots of e-mails

Good idea, now you can compact. What OE is doing is compacting the dbx files that have got to be large files. Its also best to delete these files every so often, because they still effect the speed that OE loads, and even deleting or cleaning email within OE does not reduce the size of the dbx files.

Oh fun and joy I think I'll just delete manually it's not a good thing for anything MS to be done automated with user prompts IMO

I don't use Outlook Express or any thing like those E-Mail programs. I think it's better to use Webmails

there also used to be the mozilla suite which was firefox nd thunderbird under 1 name, im not sure if thats still going or if they split it up into firefox and thunderbird

I don't think they will split firefox and thunderbird, i dont see a reason why they should split.
