I am trying to get my own forum off the ground and currently have 7 un-active members.

What is the best(whilst still being free) way to get members to my forum?

I have even gone to the extent of printing out flyers etc. Should i pass these around? Like, tape to a lamp post or wall? Or should I just continue to spread the word around the net ?

here are my usual methods:

1. Always include your url and site name in your signature
2. Join in on forums related to your site and suggest it to them
3. See if you can arrange some link exchanges with sites related to yours.


I once thought about doing some sort of flyer or posted advertising.. but then would that really be sensible and would it actually work

No harm in trying....
Also, get listed on all the top seach engines, etc.

i'm listed on Google. and all the flyers i got are just sitting in a box in my cupboard. Also i'm pretty anoyed cause the fan in my computer has been playing up and last night it completely died. Hopefully it didn't melt.

ye ur a bit screwed if ur fan packs up. if it does do not turn ur pc back on until you got a new one, lol

that reminds me - my new pc case for the pc im building has got a really nice fan on the side panel which lights ub blue(sweet)

Sending flyers out to get people to join your forums? How is that workable - I mean, shouldn't your advertising be online rather than by traditional means?

I would suggest promoting your forum on other forums - however, I'd get cosy with the forum members first before trying to persuade people to join your forum.

but then whos gonna look at a flyer on a lamp post/bus stop, then travel 2-5 miles home, then go onto the computer, then wait 6 hours to connect to the internet(AOL users only) and then remember the url and go to the site.

flyers would be pretty useless unless their being viewed to millions which i doubt is going to happen if their going to be passed out in your local village/area

you should offer your members something they want..
