I've been playing around with WordPress to be used as an engine to my blog. It's based on PHP. I read somewhere that I need to install 'something' to make PHP more search engine friendly (especially if the content is dynamic - i.e. read of a database). Any tips or comments?

to make it more se friendly. do you mean the urls?

for example with a lot of php scripts you would get a url like:

yourdomain.com/index.php?page=articles&id=32

If you mean this then there is something called mod rewrite i think.

It's not your job, but your hosts' to install it on the server. You should ask them prior to trying to enable it.

To enable mod_rewrite, and say how you want WordPress to show the URLs, go to Options then to Permalinks and follow the instructions on the page.

or something of the sort--it makes search engines index it easier.

mod_rewrite allows you to rewrite URL's. It's an Apache module. One of it's uses, as tntcheats pointed out, is to make SEF URL's. But it can be used for a lot of things.

Hmm... if it's already installed by the hosting company, do I need to configure anything? i.e. How do I use it?

i dont think you actually need to do that

My "news" page when i was looking through google for which of my pages had been indexed i notcied that most of my entries had been indexed, even though i didnt actually want them to be

It makes search engines index it easier.

It makes it EASIER for them. Doesn't mean they won't index you if you have URLs like
http://www.devdreams.com/viewtopic.php?t=579&highlight=&sid=647df3e60fc2c96d52d90cb65f507fd3

Also, Google isn't the only SE.

i never said google was the only search engine. It is though the 1 that most people use, and it was the only 1 checked.
