im TRYING to make my own blog/news program
its actually pretty hard, the only way i can get the date, posters name on it is by using a text box when the person has to put in that info but i suppose everyone has to start somewhere it also uses a text file as apposed to database because i cant even set up half the programs that use a database let alone create a program for a database

if you plan to take you blog and use it on a live site I would deffinately recommend using a database to store the data. writing to text files all the time can cause problems

eventually ill do an SQL version but not for a while im concentrating on getting my site up and running possibly set up a shoutcast server to play music then work on some more scripts.
If i do work on some scripts (currently CMS and blog) ill upload them on here seen as im thinking of getting rid of my site and just working on my music 1

you will know when i start asking loads of questions :D -but i kinda get bored half way through so i might just end up leaving them like i seem to do with a few scripts

if you get bored half way thorugh why dont you ask if someone else is interested in carrying on with it?

    *worried* such as?

well im no genius but I think if it is used often(if our site gets popular) it can be very hard on your server. Also its not very versatile meaning it cant be used as good as a database can. for example sorting would be much easier done from a database.

also databases are much more secure since text files can be accesses via a browser.

I see you point about the txt files being hard on the server... but that doesn worry me much and I'm not bothered about sorting, etc...

Your point that people can view .txt files is a good one...
Is there any way I can block the file...
I want to keep the CHMOD at 777 so I can write to it with PHP but is there anyway I can stop people viewing it without changing the CHMOD?

there is a way i got told when i was working on a script that users submit there email for things like newsletters - thats a script i did finish

    very basic though

CBG, I think you should move on to using Databases later. Text files are Ok for small sites. For medium, large and very large sites, just the I/O to the text file and searching for records alone will cripple you website's processing.

You've also got to worry about security of the file.

    Yep. Okay...
If the website is a hit I will start loking into databases right away...
Although, you can still expect me begging for help here. ;)

Truth be told, I think it'd be a little easier to code. Startup is a little more difficult - i.e. you have to set up you databases first :)

    Okay...
Well, I guess mySQL is kinda a big thing in the web busimess so i guess I'll learn it anyway...

Where are the best tutorials on using Php and MySQL...
I want to learn how to make My SQL Databases and how to send info to and from them with PHP...
